The Warlords (投名狀) Teaser Trailer - Jet Li, Andy Lau, Takeshi Kaneshiro!
Peter Chan's upcoming war epic coming in December 2007
Teaser Trailer:
Synopsis:
The nineteenth century was an era of conflict: the Franco-Prussian War and the establishment of the German Empire in Europe; the Civil War in America; the Meiji Restoration in Japan; the Opium War in China followed by the Taiping Rebellion in Nanjing… all critical events that shaped the world today. At times of chaos, heroes are born yet innocence is forever lost…
It’s the mid-19th century, one of the darkest periods of Chinese history. The country is suffering under the rule of the corrupt Manchus who invaded China from the North and established the country’s last imperial dynasty, the Qing. Natural disasters are wreaking havoc in the countryside, and in the midst of this chaos, the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, one of the strongest rebel groups ever to rise up in China, is overrunning the country and staging battles with the Qing army threatening the Dragon throne.
When Ma first met the rough-and-ready bandit, Cao Erhu (starring Andy Lau) and his trusted Lieutenant Zhang Wenxiang (starring Takeshi Kaneshiro), he had not an inkling that they will forever change his life. Cao, the dark and charismatic leader of a band of bandits, bonded with the dark Ma when this stranger saved his life. At Zhang’s urging, the three swear blood brotherhood. Ma had a dream – he wants to rid China of both the rebels and the corrupt Qing officials. Ma convinces Cao and Zhang on this noble quest and the trio soon engages in many dangerous battles and win. With the help of Cao and his men, Ma manages to squelch the rebels and rises through the ranks. Success has the power to corrupt – Ma soon became obsessed with power.
Cao and Zhang return to their native village, and Cao reunites for an evening with his beautiful wife, Lian (starring Xu Jinglei). But when she and Ma look at each other for the first time, the chemistry is overwhelming; and the seed of betrayal is sown. Ma must remove the one obstacle standing between him and the loyalty of the bandit-soldiers and the beautiful Lian.

"The Warlords" grosses 10 mln yuan box office in 6 hours
BEIJING, Dec. 14 -- Hong Kong director Peter Chan's "The Warlords" took in more than 10 million yuan, or 1.3 million U.S. dollars, at the box office in the first few hours following its release.
The war epic premiered in several Chinese cities at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
Yu Dong, president of Poly-Bona, one of the movie's producers, told a reporter with Chinese Web portal sina.com that he believed box office income could double on Thursday, when the movie opens nationwide.
"The Warlords" could potentially break the box office records set by Zhang Yimou's "Curse of Golden Flower," Yu Dong said.
The movie, starring Jet Li, Andy Lau, Takeshi Kaneshiro and Xu Jinglei, tells the tale of three blood brothers and their struggles against a backdrop of war and political upheaval. It is scheduled for North American release next March. _________________ .:: Karazen.com -- Your Chinese Entertainment Network ::.

Rose among the thorns - Xu Jinglei feels great to be the only leading lady in a film with three male leads in The Warlords.
AWARD-WINNING mainland actress and director Xu Jinglei plays female lead Lian with a firm resilience and quiet resignation.
In the beginning of the movie, we see Lian meeting the fallen General Pang (played by Jet Li) under wretched circumstances. He has just lost his whole regiment at war, while she has run away from a miserable home.
After falling in love, they soon discover their romance is not to be. Pang has inevitably become sworn brothers with Lian’s husband, Zhao (Andy Lau), so they had to restrain their passion.
As an award-winning director herself, how did Xu feel to work under director Chan?
“I feel it can be encapsulated in the archaic saying chu jiang ru xiang (referring to director Chan’s inordinate ability to make both action and drama films).
“Previously, he’s made mostly romantic dramas. Now, he’s made this particular film, which to me is deeply moving.”
Xu says it feels great to be the only leading lady in a film with a trio of leading men. But, do they steam up the screen with passionate love scenes? “Actually, the passion lies more in their feelings for each other.
“The more passionate scenes are with Jet Li. With Andy Lau, it feels like we’re a couple who’ve been married a long time. “With Jet Li, it’s different. Usually, it’s the man who makes the first move. But here, the woman has to take the initiative.”
Their repressed emotion and inner turmoil are manifested physically by their running around in the trenches trying to avoid each other and chasing after one another in turns. “It’s a bit like a sparring scene. Both are restless because they are caught up within an inner turbulence, of longing to be together yet not wanting to take the leap.”
The love scene between Lian and Pang at the battleground was filmed in one take. In their haste, actors Xu and Li unwittingly ran to an unlit area where they launched into action. Although the cameraman called for them to stop, the director requested that they carry on. It turned out that the dimmer the lighting, the more interesting the scene became. Although their faces could not be seen at all, their actions were spot on. Chan was intrigued by what transpired so he decided to use the footage as it was.
What are her impressions of Asia’s top three leading men?
“Li gives the impression of a martial arts expert no matter what he does. Lau is an intellectual with countless ideas. I did not have many scenes with Takeshi, but he comes across as an adorable fellow.”
